The Farne Islands lie off the coast of Northumbria and many of them are home to world-famous populations of gannets and other migrating seabirds. As you enter into their world of crowded black and white, the stuff of everyday dissolves behind you and the effect is mesmerising. Be grateful, however, that you're not experiencing the pervading stench of ammonia that fills the air.
